"Fuggly"

Part Three

Copyright Hugh Fisher 1996

Exterior, morning. An unspectacular office building seen from the street. The caption reads:
9:20 AM
Bureau of Resources Science

Interior, an open plan office area for four people, although Antti is the only one present. There is a knock at the door.

Antti stands up, turns, and answers the door. Mulder and Scully stand there.

MULDER: Kertrats seh c'tawy lerar Fuggly.

ANTTI: (automatically) Kna tasi Fuggly.
(confused)
I mean...huh?

Mulder and Scully hold up their badges.

MULDER: Federal agents. Please come with us, Mr Roppola.

Exterior, outside the BRS building. Mulder is speaking to someone on his phone as he walks. He looks angry.

MULDER: You don't have an interview room?

Pause.

MULDER: Budget cuts? Well, what are we supposed to do?

Interior, a Macdonald's. Antti sits at a table, looking worried and out of his depth. Scully sits opposite, looking sympathetic-playing the Good Cop in this interrogation. Mulder is standing, from his expression clearly the Bad Cop.

MULDER: You know the code phrases, don't you Antti. You're a role player. A Fuggly worshipper.

SCULLY: (softly) We know what goes on at "The Lab"

ANTTI: No, it's nothing wrong, we just watch videos.

SCULLY: What videos, Antti?

ANTTI: Star Trek, Next Gen, Voyager.
(tries to laugh)
You know, pre release stuff.

MULDER: You help Jakobsen kill people!

ANTTI: She's not the one who...

SCULLY: Someone else does? There's nobody in the house when it happens.

ANTTI: It's Phil.

MULDER: The Fuggly kills them at his command?

ANTTI: Yes...no. They're not really dead.

MULDER: Your Fuggly tears them apart!

ANTTI: Ingrid knows how to...

SCULLY: How to what, Antti?

ANTTI: Phil has Fuggly...tear them up. Ingrid knows how to revive them afterwards. Sort of zombies.

MULDER: You were there, Antti? You helped them?

ANTTI: No! I saw the videos.

SCULLY: The videos?

ANTTI: (shuddering) Sometimes...it wouldn't be Babylon 5. Home movies, he called them. A warning.

Antti buries his face in his hands. A Macdonald's waitress stops at the booth.

WAITRESS: Anyone want coffee?

MULDER: (showing badge to waitress) Federal agents. No.

She leaves.

Mulder leans over Antti, speaking quietly but still with menace.

MULDER: You're going to jail, Antti. Complicity in murder. Copyright infringement.

SCULLY: But if you cooperate with us, you won't be charged. We'd even be willing to autograph any books or posters you have.

ANTTI: They'll kill me.

SCULLY: We can protect you.

ANTTI: Fuggly will come for me. I've seen it.

SCULLY: Don't go to your home. Work late tonight, and then go straight to this hotel.

She offers him a key on a tag. Antti hesitates, thinking, then takes it.

Fade out on Mulder sitting down and bringing out a notepad.

Exterior, a short time later. Antti, flanked by Mulder and Scully, walks out of the Macdonald's and past the camera. Behind them we see the waitress, who watches them leave and then dials a number on a phone.

WAITRESS: (into phone) Kertrats seh c'tawy lerar Fuggly.

Exterior, car park of Australian Federal Police building, one hour later. Mulder and Scully come out of a door and walk towards their car.

MULDER: (bitterly) Insufficient evidence! Jakobsen will be out of the country by now.

SCULLY: (annoyed but resigned) At least we've got the phone taps, and can raid the house tonight.

Pause. Mulder says nothing.

SCULLY: I'm going to the firing range. Drop you anywhere?

MULDER: (passing over a piece of paper) Here.

SCULLY: A herb garden?

Interior, the living room in Waramanga, early afternoon. Phil sits by a phone, with of list of names and numbers. He starts dialling. We hear the normal tones, and the sound of the phone being picked up at the other end. There is a faint and unusual beep. Phil looks at the phone.

PHONE VOICE: Hello?
(pause)
Hello?

PHIL: (thinking about something) Kertrats seh c'tawy lerar Fuggly. I've changed my mind about tonight. Come here instead.

PHONE VOICE: Kna tasi Fuggly. The Lab. Got it.

Phil, still holding the handset in one hand, taps the switch on the phone base to hang up, then looks at the next name and number.

Exterior, the Bureau of Resource Science building, just after sunset. On the fourth floor a window is still lighted.

Interior, Anttis office area. The building is dark and quiet except for this one pool of light. Antti is sitting at his desk, reading a book. He yawns, stands up, and walks to the corner with the kettle.

A phone starts ringing somewhere on the floor. Antti switches on the kettle and selects a cup from the four sitting on a small tray nearby.

The phone is still ringing, annoyingly loud. He puts down the cup and walks out in search of it. We see another shadow move near the entrance once he is gone.

Another desk, in a dark office. Antti picks up the ringing phone. We hear a click. He shrugs and puts it down.

Back to his office. The kettle has boiled. He pours hot water into his cup. Next to the cup is a tea bag that wasn't there before, but Antti doesn't realise this. He picks it up.

Extreme close up of his hand moving the tea bag towards the boiling water.

Exterior shot from the street, same view as before. An explosion blows out the lighted window. Glass shards tinkle onto the road and loose papers drift through the air. The lights have gone out, but we see some dim flames. There are a few shouts and the building fire alarm.

Interior, AFP headquarters, night. Mulder and Scully are walking down a flight of stairs. Mulder has a small cloth bag in one hand.

MULDER: See the report? We've lost our witness.

SCULLY: It could be just coincidence.

MULDER: The Fuggly cult must be more wide spread than we had imagined, Scully.

SCULLY: (looking at cloth bag) More sunflower seeds?

MULDER: A surprise for the Fuggly, Scully.

Scully looks at him inquiringly. Mulder just grins.

They have reached the bottom of the stairs, in an underground car park. A dozen SWAT police are waiting for them, wearing kevlar jackets and carrying automatic weapons.

SCULLY: Our target for tonight is a suburban house. From the phone surveillance we expect there to be nine to twelve suspects, probably unarmed, and a guardian animal which we have reason to believe is extremely dangerous.

MULDER: There is also a possibility of intervention by extra terrestrial beings if we don't wrap up this operation quickly. The capabilities of these EBEs are unknown.

Scully sighs softly.

Exterior, Waramanga, later that night. Three cars are parked in front of "The Lab". A fourth pulls into the driveway.

Interior, the living room. Eight role players/Fuggly worshippers, in their twenties to thirties, wearing everyday clothes, are sitting around. Two more have just walked in.

STANDING: Where's Phil?

SITTING 1: Don't know. The door was unlocked when we arrived.

SITTING 2: He left the tapes out for us.

Outside. The SWAT police move carefully through the garden towards the house. Mulder and Scully follow the first wave, crouching slightly. Mulder has his cloth bag out.

Inside. Everyone is watching a video, and making comments or eating chocolate. The door bursts inward and police with guns swarm in.

POLICE: Freeze! Police! Don't move!

Silence. Mulder and Scully enter and look around.

SCULLY: (baffled) No ceremony.

MULDER: (sudden inspiration) I know where he is.

Interior, John Curtin School of Medical Research, the science lab we saw before. The door is open. A central area has been cleared except for one large table. Phil stands to the left, kindling a small fire. Intricate symbols drawn on the table surround the fire. A small column of dense, dark grey smoke starts rising. On the other side of the table sits the Fuggly, watching attentively. Behind all this is the huge T-Rex tank.

The Fuggly looks up and towards the door. We hear, very faintly, a police siren. Phil hears it too.

PHIL: (to Fuggly) Defend me.

The Fuggly stands up, leaps off the table, and stalks out through the door.

Entrance to John Curtin. SWAT police, followed by Mulder and Scully, move down the corridor in tactical formation. The corridors are dark and gloomy instead of brightly lit as before, with only a few emergency lights on.

Inside John Curtin. From a turning ahead comes a ferocious growl. The police close up and ready their guns.

The Fuggly comes around the corner, in the dim light looking like a normal cat. The police relax, and lower their weapons.

MULDER: (behind them) No, look out!

A series of fast action cuts with a background of shots, shouts, and snarls, like the reactor scene in "Aliens": The Fuggly leaps into the front row of police - overhead lights hit by gunfire and everything goes dark - loud yell of agony - Fuggly drags down a policeman - more shots hit a pipe, releasing clouds of fumes - police captain yells "Get back! Get back!" - extreme close up of Fuggly jaws and eyes - slashing paw hits the back of a policeman's leg, falls - police shooting on full automatic at something.

Back at the entrance. Police, helping wounded comrades, the last two laying down covering fire, retreat from the fumes. We hear one last triumphant growl from somewhere in the darkness.

Mulder, Scully find each other.

MULDER: Are you OK Scully?

SCULLY: I'm fine, but some of these men look badly hurt.

MULDER: They're just extras. I need you for the final showdown. We'll have to sneak in another way.

SCULLY: I saw another door on the left as we drove up.

Exterior of John Curtin. Mulder and Scully run along the wall and around the corner until they come to an ordinary door. Mulder tries the handle. It's locked. He uses the butt of his gun to break the glass, then reaches in to open it.

Inside the lab. The fire is burning steadily. Smoke rises to the ceiling and flows outwards, almost covering it by now. We see the night sky and constellations somehow appearing in the smoke. Next to one cluster of stars, a faint yellow patch appears and starts to pulsate.

Phil walks over to the controls at one end of the T-Rex tank. There is a whirr of pumps, and the fluid level starts to drop.

Inside, another corridor. Mulder and Scully come to an intersection and stop.

MULDER: Which way?

SCULLY: I don't know.

MULDER: Split up.

They run in different directions. We see that Mulder is still holding his cloth bag.

Inside the lab. The glowing spot has become a couple of metres across, and tendrils of light start flowing from it into the T-Rex.

Just outside the lab. Dark, with fumes still drifting through the air. Mulder, walking slowly and looking from side to side, approaches the open door. With a growl, the Fuggly appears from the other end of the corridor and stalks towards him.

Mulder, keeping his eyes on the Fuggly, brings the cloth bag out in front of his body, then suddenly flicks it forward. Small green leaves fall to the floor.

The Fuggly growls again, then sniffs the air. Moves to the leaves and sniffs again. Purrs, and then lies down and rolls over amid the leaves, looking very relaxed.

Mulder carefully edges past.

Inside the lab. The glowing patch has all but disappeared, with the last remnants flowing into the T-Rex. The stars in the smoke fade out. Phil stands, arms folded, waiting.

Mulder steps in, with gun drawn.

MULDER: (walking forward, pointing gun) You're under arrest!

PHIL: (slowly stretching arms wide) Fuggly!

MULDER: (holding out bag with other hand) Catnip, Phil. Your Fuggly is sleeping peacefully outside. It's over.

PHIL: (smiling) Oh really?

With a splintering sound, the glass at the front of the tank falls out. The T-Rex, eyes glowing red, pokes its head out.

Mulder stares at in horror, then fires six shots. Blood dribbles out of holes and the T-Rex roars, but continues to wriggle and stretch out of the tank.

SCULLY: (off screen) Mulder, get down!

We see Scully standing in the doorway, gun aimed with both hands. She fires two shots into the large master computer, which promptly bursts into flame.

From the doorway, we see a huge explosion. As is typical for secret mad science laboratories, this one is highly inflammable and structurally unsound. A huge chunk of ceiling collapses onto Phil and the T-Rex. There is a deep bellow of agony. Things start popping and burning, and more bits of ceiling fall.

Quick shot of Mulder and Scully running down a corridor. Rumblings and explosions behind them. A wave of dust and smoke follows them.

Exterior, John Curtin. Mulder, Scully, and the police watch smoke and flames pour out of the entrance and windows.

Interior, Australian Federal Police office, next day. The table is now clean. Mulder is dictating into the tape recorder.

"Both the leader of the Fuggly cult and his two guardian animals appear to have perished in the destruction of JCSMR. Also destroyed were the samples and records being kept by Jakobsen. All that remains is the heart found in the house at Waramanga and some fragmentary notes. There is some hope that with these, and the remains still held in the police morgue, the revivification process may be duplicated and Leahy returned to life."

"Jakobsen herself disappeared from her flight during a stopover in Los Angeles and has not been seen since. A woman matching her description was reported entering the research wing of the Tyrell corporation, but this has not been confirmed. She remains wanted for questioning."

"The Australian authorities have requested that we not leave the country until the investigation into the activities of the Fuggly cult is finished. Agent Scully and myself intend to use this time to visit other sites of interest within Australia. Our investigation in Canberra is at an end."

Exterior, a Canberra house and front lawn, seen through the inhuman eyes of the Fuggly. A young woman is relaxing in a chair on the low verandah with a book. The camera creeps stealthily across the lawn towards her.

The young woman, who resembles Ingrid, becomes aware of the Fuggly and looks down.

INGRIDS SISTER: (surprised, happy) Fuggly!

Normal view. We see a dirty and miserable looking Fuggly. She bends down and picks him up. The Fuggly gives a faint miaow.

INGRIDS SISTER: Awww...you look terrible.
(turning towards house)
We'll find you someone to eat.
